Carolyn, those are excellent suggestions that I need to really work hard to follow, considering the size of my scrap bucket (srsly). I need to get more comfortable with being outside of my sandbox creatively.

I did sit down with my scraps, yank out everything I could find that was tealish blue, and start doing some of the blocks I mentioned earlier. It's a good start, and I'll keep doing this with different colors, mixing in shades and shapes until scrappy doesn't weird me out anymore.

Dude. Maybe you just don't have enough scraps yet!!! I have enough baby- or kiddo-fabric to make a scrappy quilt from but in terms of what I would consider more "me" or adult fabrics, I still don't really have enough to get SUPER scrappy yet.

Also, I would say that there is a HUGE portion of the quilting community online that has yet to figure this out -- I see them churning out quilt after quilt of "one line only" fabrics.

My suggestions would be two-fold: 1) purposely go to an actual fabric store, rather than online, find one fabric you like, and then wander around the store finding things to go with it from other shelves/areas of the store. You will start to find things that "feel" like they come from the same line even though they don't. It'll be easier to see what the possibilities are. and 2) Try working with contrasts rather than "colors". A lot of scrappy quilts work b/c there is good definition between the "lights" and "darks" in the selection / so the pattern really jumps. Take a pile of scraps, divide into lights / darks and pair indiscriminately. See how that changes what your eye is looking for.

That's one super-cool bracelet, dude. Now you need to create a tutorial, you know, in all your free time.

So excited for the little guy! I can't wait to hear how the first day goes!

I like direction in a quilt, and knowing boy or girl gives me SOME direction. Also, I'm always afraid someone will be all, THIS QUILT HAS PINK IN IT when they have a boy, but that's the risk they run for not checking on the tiny bits. It's really their own fault.
